Submit Scholarship

The Journal accepts scholarship in various formats. The Print edition publishes traditional Articles by professors, student Notes, Recent Decisions of Interest and Book Reviews. The Online edition embraces those categories and also publishes a separate Blog.

The Journal is open for submissions.

GENERAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

The International Law & Human Rights Journal is open for submissions. We invite submission of Articles via Scholastica, or by e-mail to inquiries@rutgers-ilhr-journal.org. We are committed to considering all submissions thoroughly. Every manuscript we receive undergoes an extensive evaluation: each piece is reviewed by at least three editors and many pieces go through substantial assessment stages, including an Articles Committee review, an Editorial Board vote, a faculty preemption check, and a double-blinded peer-review. This process can take several weeks. We kindly ask that you to request an expedited review of your submission if you have received an offer of publication from another journal. We will make every effort to honor your request. Keep in mind that we do not omit any of our review stages and an expedited review provides your article with no competitive advantage in our process. We also ask that you withdraw any submissions for which you have accepted an offer of publication elsewhere.

DEADLINE

For our Fall 2023 digital issue, submissions are due no later than August 1, 2023.
For our Spring 2024 peer reviewed publication, submissions are due no later than October 1, 2023.

Please indicate which publication you prefer in your cover letter.

CONTENT REQUIREMENTS

ILHRJ endeavors to publish high-quality scholarship that centers the perspectives of underrepresented groups in today’s most consequential legal discussions.

For our Fall 2023 digital issue, we seek submissions covering, but not limited to, global health, women and increased exposure to violence, discrimination, prisoners’ rights, disruption of education, civil rights, and reparations. We encourage authors to examine the entanglement and indivisibility of international law and human rights to show readers how to protect the integrity and dignity of all people.

For our Spring 2024 peer reviewed publication, the ILHRJ welcomes diverse contributions focused on one or more subject matter areas, such as international humanitarian law and security, trade and investment, public and private power, environmental law, air and space law, international maritime law, and the development of international institutions. The Editorial Board is interested in practical, doctrinal, comparative, theoretical, and institutional perspectives on the response to regional and global risks in an era of rapid change.

Length Limitations

The International Law & Human Rights Journal is committed to publishing work that is concise and readable.

For our Fall 2023 digital issue, we are seeking shorter submissions that are more of an extended essay in nature, which do not exceed 15,000 words, excluding footnotes.

For our Spring 2024 peer reviewed print issue, submissions should not exceed 25,000 words, including text, footnotes, and appendices.

Citation Format

Please use footnotes rather than end notes. When possible, sources should include an imbedded hyperlink.

Cover Letter

Submissions should include a cover letter with the article’s title, author’s e-mail address, mailing address, telephone number, a brief abstract with a description of the article, and any relevant work that the author has in the field. Please indicate whether your submission should be evaluated for our Fall 2022 digital issue or Spring 2023 peer-reviewed publication.
